What’s already in your set

Your bowls are in a G# major scale. The full scale runs do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti, do:

G#
do
A#
re · add
C
mi
C#
fa
D#
so
F
la
G
ti · add
G#
do · octave

You have six of the eight, including both G#s that bracket the octave (a 3rd-octave and a 4th-octave G#). You are only missing A# (re) and G (ti) to complete the full run.

Here is what you can already play with what you own:

  • Major chords: G# major (G#, C, D#) and C# major (C#, F, G#).
  • A major sixth: G# major 6 (G#, C, D#, F), all four notes in hand.
  • A major seventh: C# major 7 (C#, F, G#, C), all four notes in hand.
  • Minor chords: F minor (F, G#, C), and the fuller F minor 7 (F, G#, C, D#).
  • A pentatonic, almost: you are one note (A#) from the G# major pentatonic (G#, A#, C, D#, F), which is the same five notes as the F minor pentatonic, its relative.
  • Your deep D#: your 12" D#+10 (3rd octave) is a low fifth beneath your G# root, giving the whole set a grounded foundation.

There is some overlap in what you would add: A# also belongs to D# minor, and deeper F would anchor F minor, the relative minor of this scale. So a couple of notes open more than one direction. The full notes of each:

  • D# minor: D#, F, F#, G#, A#, B, C#, D#.
  • F minor: F, G, G#, A#, C, C#, D#, F.

Grow your set

A few directions, for whenever you want them.

A deeper F

A lower F would also work with your set and allow you to play an F minor scale. This is the deep F you played, plus the other deep Fs we have. A note on tuning: I usually suggest staying within about 20 cents of your set. Some of these are in that range. Any that are +15 or -15 are a little outside it, so listen to those by ear, playing them next to your bowls.

A#

A# is the note missing from your pentatonic, the second note of your G# major scale. You did not see these yesterday, and the A# you saw is not on the site, but here are the A#s we have. A couple are just above your set at +15, so try those by ear.

G

G is the seventh of your scale, the note just below the octave, and it completes the full run. Here are the Gs in your range. A couple are a little outside your usual -10 to +10, so try those by ear.

Deeper octaves, SuperGrades

Larger SuperGrades an octave below your set. They anchor the bottom, and the deep D#s also give you the low root for D# minor. The 18" C#+15 is a little above your usual -10 to +10, so try it by ear.

B, toward D# minor

B, with an A#, would be part of the D# minor scale, a deeper scale below the G# major scale. Here are the Bs in your range. The 8" B+10 is at our Richmond location; the rest are in New York.

Practitioner bowls, tuning forks and pyramids

Other forms in your notes: G# pyramid, and G#/G mini practitioner.

With a few of these you could also build toward F minor, D# minor, or D# major.
