Bowls for Alexandra Hodovanu

How to use this page

Tap any of your bowls for its full description and its SKU, which is what you use to insure it. If we are missing any of your bowls, tell us and we will add them. It makes what we recommend for you a lot better.

Below are bowls that would go with your set. Tap the heart to save one, then send me your list from the bottom right. Listen with headphones.

These are all in the New York studio unless the bowl says Richmond. Tell me which ones you want to hear and I will have them out for you.

Special pricing through Sept 30

The bowls marked Special price are ones I have on loan that are going back soon, so those are reduced through Sept 30. Buy one of them and it is 10% off. Buy two and they are 12% off. Buy three or more and they are 15% off. Bowls without that mark are at their usual price. Take two or more of the marked bowls, though, and any other bowl comes down 10% too, including ones that are not on this page. If there is something else you want, ask me.

How the pricing works

Any special pricing goes on an invoice from me, not the cart, so there is nothing to check out here. If something calls to you, just tell me.

Care & resources

Care documents, and the insurers other clients use.

What you already have

Your six bowls give you C#, D#, F, G# and A#. Those five notes are a complete C# major pentatonic (C#, D#, F, G#, A#). The same five read the other way are an A# minor pentatonic (A#, C#, D#, F, G#), so you already have both a bright set and a darker one in the same bowls.

Here is what you can play right now:

  • Major chord: C# major (C#, F, G#).
  • Minor chord: A# minor (A#, C#, F).
  • Minor 7: A# minor 7 (A#, C#, F, G#).
  • Whole pentatonic: all five at once, nothing to avoid.

Your tuning is -15 to 0. You could either go to -20 or to +5 to stay within 20 cents.

Grow your set

The full C# major scale

Your scale is C#, D#, F, F#, G#, A#, C. You have five of the seven. F# and C are the two still to add.

F#

F# is the sixth note of your scale. It falls between two bowls you already own, so it fills the widest gap in your set. Everything here is in your tuning.

Adding F# gives you 4 chords you cannot play today: F# major (F#, A#, C#), D# minor (D#, F#, A#), D# minor 7 (D#, F#, A#, C#) and F# major 7 (F#, A#, C#, F). It also gives you a new five-note scale to play through, F# major pentatonic (F#, G#, A#, C#, D#).

C

C is the seventh note of your scale. These are the two C bowls in your tuning right now. Both are −15 and both are 4th octave, same as most of your set. I am not sure either alchemy is your style, so look at them and tell me. If neither one is right I will keep watching for another C. Worth knowing: C does more than finish this scale. It also opens G# major (G#, A#, C, C#, D#, F, G) as a second scale, and you already own five of those seven notes.

Adding C gives you 4 chords you cannot play today: G# major (G#, C, D#), F minor (F, G#, C), F minor 7 (F, G#, C, D#) and C# major 7 (C#, F, G#, C). It also gives you a new five-note scale to play through, G# major pentatonic (G#, A#, C, D#, F).

Deeper octaves of the notes you already have

Your set is all 4th octave apart from your 6" C#. These are the same notes one octave down, which is the fastest way to add depth without changing what you can play. The 10" F−10 Ruby is the one to look at first if you want to replace the deep F you used to have. It is tuned to the same −10 as your 8" F, one octave below it, and F is the note that makes your set sound major rather than minor. Three others here repeat alchemies you already own, so they will feel familiar next to your bowls. There is no 3rd octave C# in stock right now, and the deeper D# bowls are all SuperGrades, so those are in the SuperGrade section below rather than here.

SuperGrades

SuperGrades are the large, deep-octave bowls. They anchor a set from underneath and carry a room on their own. The first two are in your tuning. The rest are outside it. At this depth the cents matter far less than they do in the higher octaves, so listen to them alongside your bowls and decide by ear.

Minis, tuning forks and pyramids

Small, portable, and easy to travel with. The doubles are binaural, meaning two bowls in one, tuned close together so they beat gently against each other. Pyramids and forks are their own instruments, so their tuning does not have to match your set. This is everything we have in these three categories, and all of them are at the special price.
